Thoughts about…
a different motorbike.
About a year ago I started thinking about lighter motorbike. For most of my trips, so far, were the heavier bikes fine, but I did find myself several times in situations where I wanted to go down a small track or explore a path and I hadn't because if I had to turn around or fall, I'd be in trouble. Btw.,I do fall a lot when I ride off-road because unfortunately, my name is not Pol Tarrés or Chris Burch.
Even though my Ténéré 700 is not that heavy, about 215Kg, she is still difficult to handle in tricky situations because she is quite top heavy.
Hmm, could I have written man handle my bike or should it be now person handle my bike? Just thinking...
Also because the T7 is rather slim she lays almost flat on the ground and because of this is even more difficult to pick up than my old 1200 GS (265Kg).
Anyway, a lighter bike would not only be way easier to handle in tricky situations but also be cheaper to run.
Another solution would be to never ride alone, but it is pretty difficult to find a riding partner that not only suits your riding skill and style but also fits your personal preferences (breaks, sightseeing, photography, camping or hotel, etc). That's why most long distance riders travel alone.
Anyway, after looking at every website of motorbike manufactures I found only one bike that fits my needs and requiremants; the Honda CRF 300 Rally.
She is light, with a good fuel range and except for the suspension ready to ride. There are of course other mods needed but since you need them for all adventure bikes from the factory floor, I don't mention them here.
Maybe next year other manufactures will bring out smaller bikes too but at the moment, she's my pick.
Here are some of my criteria:
- 21"/18" spoked wheels
- fuel range of about 400Km or more
- light - around 150kg ready to ride, incl. some mods more likely 160Kg. Still 55kg less than my T7
- reliable
- good selection of third party accessories - not that I need many but it's nice to get ideas
However, I'm not sold yet and since I have all next year to consider, I'll just wait and see. But it's sure nice to think about it ;)
